BOXING has taken Brendon Smith around the world. As trainer to former world lightweight champion Michael Katsidis, Smith has trained in some of the most unique gyms throughout the world. From the isolated boxing camps in Thailand through to the famous Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn, Smith has seen all that the boxing world has to offer. Now, however, he is looking to make his own mark by establishing a boxing gym in Toowoomba. "We've owned the gym for about seven years, but until recently we just hadn't done anything with it," Smith said. "Boxing is something my family has been involved in all of our lives and I've been a trainer for 21 years, so this is something we know a bit about. On Monday, Smith will open Smithy's Gym at Newtown, a venue he hopes will bring boxers to the Garden City. "I've always had a passion for what I do and where I come from and I wanted to do something like this in Toowoomba. "One of my goals is to not only create a gym but a museum to boxing and particularly local boxers. "Michael (Katsidis) and I had the opportunity to train at Gleason's Gym in New York and some great champions have come out of that gym. I'd love for this gym to be a place where great boxers train and they come back and talk to other people who are training here and create a bit of an atmosphere. "All we've done is create a venue. It's not just for fighters, but for anyone who wants to get fit and have fun using boxing. It will hopefully give people an idea of what it is like to train in a world class boxing gym." Currently, the facility houses three boxing rings and about 20 punching bags, as well as speed balls, floor to ceiling bags and cardio equipment. The gym, on Anzac Avenue, is open to the general public and specific packages are available for sporting teams looking to undertake fitness training.

Saturday Nights' Muay Thai Action 3 at the Toowoomba Indoor Bowls Hall gave RINGS Toowoomba Fight Team a win and a loss with Dan Luker securing a KO win against Kwan Fong in the third round and Trevor Sloan losing by unnanimous decision against Dean Wood. In the first bout, Sloan started slowly against Wood who moved Sloan around the ring, positioning him against the ropes with long ranging jabs. Sloans retaliation of combinations kept Wood on his toes though and the taller Wood had to work hard to control the encounter. After having one 8 count in the first round and two in the second, Sloan knew that the only way he would be able to record his maiden victory was by way of KO in round three, however with a galant attempt and a barage of thigh kicks, Wood hung on for the win. Making a return to the ring after a two year layoff, Dan Luker made up for lost time with a flawless display against Kwan Fong. In a battle that received a standing ovation fromt he crowd at the end, Luker and Fong went toe-to-toe for the first two rounds. Luker gave Fong a headstart on the height and reach department but gave no ground to the lanky visitor with take down after take down sapping Fong of energy. Nursing a neck injury into the fight, it looked like Luker would not make it into the third round but knowing he was in front and with a few chioce words from the corner, Luker finished the fight with a knee to the head of Fong who couldnot make it to his feet and was counted out by the ref.

RINGS Fight Team debutant Tyson "Kamakaze" KROEHN made it a special moment on saturday night when he won his bout against Matt Cay at the FightWorld Cup held at Nerang PCYC. On a card headlined by the return of Aussie MMA legend Chris "The Hammer" Haseman, Kroehn defeated his heavier and taller opponent by arm bar 1min 20 into the first round. A bundle of nerves in the change room and feeling like he was going to be sick, a hand shake and a few words from Haseman soon had the youngster fired up and ready to go. The bout started steady as both competitors were feeling each other out and trying to find their rhythm in their first contest. Kroehn began the pleasentries with a few low round kicks to Cays lead leg. Cay retaliated with his own combinations but Kroehn defended easily and began to settle in. A savage thigh kick from Kroehn put Cay on the back foot as the Kamakaze moved in for the kill. As the fight went to the ground Kroehn found his comfort zone. Moving Cay into his guard, Kroehn found a loose arm as Cay stood to get free. Locking on an arm bar there was no escape for Cay as he rolled in an attempt to break away, Kroehn secured the hold and took the win in an emphatic victory. Another great result for the RINGS Toowoomba Fight Team after the weekend with Brad Nixon easily winning his bout but Trevor SLOAN was not as fortunate.
Sloan, competing for the first time, went the full distance against a much heavier Scott AURERY from First Strike Gym Brisbane, but was unlucky not to secure a first-up victory losing by majority points to his taller and heavier opponent. The heavy handed Sloan let Aurery know he was there for a battle by dominating with his fast and hard hand combinations. But Aurery got the advantage mid way through the second round after discovering he could keep Sloan at bay with his ranging Left front kicks. Sloan was unable to penetrate through Aurery's defence enough to enable his hands to work effectively and was unable to make up the lost ground.
Brad Nixon made ammends for his team-mates misfortune, making easy work of his Modified Thai bout against a fighter only known as GLEN from Taumafi Gym Caboolture. Nixon made a slow and nervous start to his match giving Glen an early opportunity to get some cheap points on the board. But after receiving a couple smart jab-cross combos from Glen, Nixon retalliated with some smooth punch-kick barrages that immediately had Glen on the back foot. Nixon moved smartly around the ring not giving his opponent much chance to get back on track.
At the end of the second round, Nixon had Glen bleeding freely from the nose and mouth after delivering a number of perfectly timed and weighted jabs. Glen was glad to hear the final bell and Nixon took the win by unanimous decision.
Other results from the night had Jun LEE from Boonchu Gym defeat Jason MARSH from Fighting Dragons for the QUEENSLAND WELTER WEIGHT TITLE and Shona MINNS beat Eilleen FORREST from Gladstone Fight Club with a controversial split points decision in the WOMENS QUEENSLAND TITLE.

A very busy end-of-year starts this month when Brad "President" NIXON returns to the ring on October 18 at the Team Ngaphui Amateur Muay Thai event in Toowoomba. Nixon is looking to continue with his good form when he competes in a mod-Thai bout against a yet to be confirmed opponent. Promotoer Phil Renata has ensured that both Brad and newby junior, Jacob DALEY will each get a start. Youngster DALEY is looking to make a grand entrance when he also competes in a Mod-Thai bout for U/16yrs. Daley has been champing at the bit to get a start in the Ring and looks set to have his wish granted. When asked if his parents agreed Daley said," Yeah, dad was pretty cool about it but mum said I could only fight if she can squeal if I get hurt!". Someone needs to talk with his mum! November gets super busy. Endurance Promotions is holding their final production of the year on Saturday the 8th with a combined Muay Thai and MMA event at Acacia Ridge. Rock Hard Toowoomba local Paul BECKMANN will look to avenge the loss of his mentor Pete Davis, when he challanges the smooth and slick Roy LUXTON for the Queensland U/70kg SPARTAN MMA Title. Beckmann was skilled enough to hold out the talented Nelson STEWART from IMA in August to earn the opportunity to challange for the title. As yet, no RINGS Fight Team members have been nominated for this event but they are ready at the call. Huge news, undoubtedly the biggest Oz MMA news in years, is the return of "The HAMMER" Chris HASEMAN to competition. Its been four long years since we last saw our fearless RINGS Australia champion compete and it set to be a roof raising event held by the one and only Kerry DUNNE. Kerry was the originator of the SPARTAN Reality Fight Series way back in 2001 before heading to Japan for a few years. Let it be known though, that it was here on this website that this comeback was first hinted!! So far, two RINGS Fight Team members have been nominated and confirmed for this event- "Hard As" Chris FECHTNER and Tyson "KAMIKAZE" Kroehn. (Don't you just love Fight Names!) Fechnter returns to MMA this time in an A-Class match which allows head strikes on the ground and Kroehn makes his debut in a B-Class junior event which does not allow head strikes on ground. Kroehn has been ready for this fight for nearly twelve months and we pity the poor fool that will stand in the opposite corner on this one. The kid brings a fight to every practice session. Fechtner has made a recovery from injury following his debut win also at the Endurance August promotion and is looking set to maintain his record. November 29 is of course the return of the ENEMY Series this time incorporating a C-class styled round robin MMA event. The MMA division will be run the same as the submission class but will obviously include body stiking standing and grounded. This will be an excellent opportunity for any competitors looking to enter into MMA competition to experience the next level of battle. If you are interested in competing at the ENEMY ON THE FLOOR IV, keep a check on this website for forthcoming details. Lead up to Arana Hills
Three members of the RINGS TOOWOOMBA FIGHT TEAM will compete at the Arana Hills PCYC this coming Saturday the 23rd in Amateur Muay Thai bouts. Dan CORLISS returns to the ring in another Modified Muay Thai bout making it two fights in three weeks and is looking to avenge his first fight defeat in an under 80kg bout. His opponent is yet to be named. Two debutants take to the square stage also - Trevor SLOAN and Brad NIXON. Sloan, a former boxer, is set to try his skills in an under 65kg bout and Nixon has an interesting entry to competition, being nominated in a 4 Man Eliminator for novice competitors under 77kg. All three fighters are fully fit for their fights and will have a mass of support with RINGS taking a team bus to the event. Any one interested in going should contact Peter HICKMOTT as soon as possible as seats are limited.
Mixed Success at Rumble on the Ridge
The return of the RINGS TOOWOOMBA FIGHT TEAM had mixed results on Saturday night when Chris FECHNER and Dan CORLISS stepped up to the plate at the Rumble On The Ridge fight night. Fechner making his debut in a Bclass MMA bout easily accounted for his opponent, Greg WYNNE from Ipswich Combat Centre, taking the win with a unanimous points decision at the end of their 2x5 min bout. Fechner looked in complete control from the opening bell and did not let Wynne have any opportunity to change the direction of the fight. Fechner dominated the fight like a seasoned veteran and received deserving acknowledgement from the crowd when announced vitorious. Corliss however, was not as fortunate in his Modified May Thai bout against Jordan ZAPHIR from Black Dragon Kai, losing by a majority points decision after the 3x2 min battle. Both fighters stood toe-to-toe during the entire encounter, trading blow for blow. Corliss began strongly from the opening bell and showed his fitness before missing an overhand right from Zaphir which sent him to the canvas and a standing 8second count. Corliss recovered strongly from this, taking to Zaphir with a combination barage for the next two rounds but was unable to make up the lost points. Judges scoring 30-27, 29-28, 28-28 to Zaphir. Other results from the night which had two Australian Title Muay Thai Bouts and a Womens World Title Bout saw Rock Hard Toowoomba's Paul BECKMAN win his eliminator bout against a well drilled Nelson STEWART from IMA. Beckman took the fight to Stewart and won a unanimous points decision for his efforts. Beckman, with nothing to lose and all to gain, went hammer'n'tong against Stewart who had no answer for his lanky opponents continual submission attempts and never-say-die attitude. Beckman withstood an early ground pounding from Stewart which could have ended the fight early in the first round. But to his credit, Beckman guarded up and defended before turning the bout in his direction. Rock Hard by name and Rock Hard by nature, Mr. Rock Hard, Pete DAVIS was unfortunate in his much anticipated bout against a younger Roy LUXTON from 5Rings Gold Coast, losing by KO mid way through the first round. Davis gave the talented Luxton a run for his money in the early encounters but Luxton, boasting a 6-0 record and with World Champion Muay Thai fighter Nathan "CARNAGE" CORBET in his corner along side a Russian wrestler and a Brazilian BJJ Black belt beside him, had a bit to lose should Davis score a victory. Luxton gained control midway through the first round and shortly after a quick blood stoppage on Davis, delivered the final blow with a cracking Right head kick that had Davis out before he hit the canvas. For more details on the nights results, check the results link in this section.
Leading up to tomorrow nights "Rumble At The Ridge" Muay Thai, Amatuer Boxing and MMA Event at the Acacia Ridge Hotel, both Dan CORLISS and Chris FECHNER successfully came in under their required catch weights.
Both fighters making their debut tomorrow, easily came in under weight. Chris Fechner came in at 79.7kg for the required 80.0kg and Dan Corliss at 81.8 for his required 85.0. Both boys opposition made the weight restriction as well. Chris' opponent - Greg WYNNE from Ipswich Combat Centre also making his debut scraped in at 80.0 clean and Dan's opponent - Jordan ZAPHIR from Black Dragon Kai Beaudesert also made easy work at 83.0kg.
Fellow Mountain Men, Pete DAVIS and Paul BECKMAN both from Rock Hard Gym, successfully weighed in for their respective fights as well.
Davis fights off against tough Gold Coaster Roy LUXTON for the Spartan Qld Title U/70kg and Beckman takes on Nelson STEWART from Integrated Martial Arts Brisbane in an eliminator event for the U/73kg Qld Title.
Fight results will be posted after the event.
Pete "The BULL" Hickmott. NINNESS, KROEHN OUT. CORLISS & FECHTNER IN The long awaited return for Bec Ninness to the Ring will have to go on a bit longer when she recently revealed that she has to undergo more unforseen surgery. This will keep Bec sidelined for a few more weeks. And Tyson Kroehn, the 'ready-to-go-anytime-kid' will miss making his debut also on the same show at the 'Rumble At The Ridge' Muay Thai and MMA Event on August 2, injured his shoulder during a shoolboys Rugby League match. Tyson has been ordered to lay low by his doc until further notice. In place of the two injured fighters, two more have stepped up to represent RINGS TOOWOOMBA at the event - Dan CORLISS and Chris FECHTNER. Dan will make his debut in a modified Muay Thai fight and Chris will don the small gloves in a B-Class MMA battle. Both boys are ready and have been training the house down at every opportunity. Its been a long time since RINGS TOOWOOMBA was represented by more than one competitor at an event and this one is shaping up to be a great entry for those wanting to compete on a regular basis. It would be great to see as many Rings members go to this event to give your support to the boys.
ENEMY ON THE FLOOR Competitors from as far away as Weipa have expressed interest in competing in the Enemy On The Floor Series and next weeks event is coming together perfectly. Already entries have been received from Gladstone, Gold Coast, Brisbane Metro, Ipswich and Sunshine Coast teams. This small but well constructed competition allows athletes to compete in a format that gives them opportunity to display their individual ability without the fear of being severly injured. Invitations have been sent out to many teams across the country and to Fight Promoters aswell.
GLADSTONE CAGE COMPETITION Rob McIntyr from Gladstone MMA will be hosting the first Amatuer MMA Competition in a Cage in October. Kick Boxing/Muay Thai
Great start to the year with some excellent numbers coming to class. There is good interest from a couple guys (& girls) wanting to compete in the near future. There should hopefully be some Amatuer comps coming up soon so the opportunity is there.
Mixed Martial Arts
Our beloved Bec has returned to training after having Wrist surgery on an ongoing problem that has plagued her for some time. Bec was due to go to New Zealand as part of an Australasian Womens MMA team to compete against the USA, at the end of May. But unfortunately had to take care of this first! Not to worry, both the promoter and Oz team captain are still wanting Bec to compete in the next event towards the year end.
In the meantime, both Bec and Tyson have been penciled in to compete at the next Spartan/Endurance MMA and Muay Thai event in August. Tyson was on the receiving end of what could be a fighters worst nightmare when, for his first fight, his opponent withdrew only 1 day before the comp. Since then though, he has been actively increasing his ability both standing and on the ground. I pitty the fool that meets him this time.
